60 // Stand Still, Look Pretty: A Betty Draper Fanmix
I recently finished catching up on Mad Men. While my absolutely favorite has to be Joan, there's no denying that there's something utterly fascinating about Betty Draper. Of all the show's characters, she's the one I'm most excited to see this season. There are just so many places they could go with her. Anyway, I told
pulltheripchord I'd make this and I did. The hardest part turned out to be cutting it down to a decent length.

01) "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," the Shirelles.
Is this a lasting treasure or just a moment's pleasure?
Can I believe the magic of your smile?
Will you still love me tomorrow?
Tonight with words unspoken, you say that I'm the only one,
but will my heart be broken when the night meets the morning sun?
02) "Grey," Ani DiFranco.
I smoke and I drink and everytime I blink,
I have a tiny dream.
But as bad as I am, I'm proud of the fact
that I'm worse than I seem.
What kind of paradise am I looking for?
I've got everything I want -- still I want more.
03) "Before I Knew," Basia Bulat.
Oh, it was the first time I fell in love,
the first time I felt my heart, was the first time
I sang out loud all through the night.
But before I knew it, I was lost.
Before I knew, I was a prisoner
and I still can't find a way to make it right.
04) "Stand Still, Look Pretty," the Wreckers.
Sometimes I find myself shaking in the middle of the night --
and then it hits me and I can't even believe this is my life.
But people have problems that are worse than mine --
I don't want you to think I'm complaining all the time
and I wish that everyone would go and shut their mouth.
I'm not strong enough to deal with it.
I am slowly falling apart.
I wish you'd take a walk in my shoes for a start.
And you might think it's easy being me --
you just stand still, look pretty.
05) "Don't Deconstruct," Rilo Kiley
Don't deconstruct then fill me in.
I'm not that basic, I swear.
I've had enough of breakdowns and diagrams.
Judging from picture books,
apparently Heaven is a partly cloudy place.
06) "Cath...," Death Cab for Cutie.
Cath, she stands with a well-intentioned man,
but she can't relax with his hand on the small of her back.
As the flashbulbs burst, she holds a smile
like someone would hold a crying child.
Soon everybody will ask what became of you.
Your heart was dying fast. You didn't know what to do.
07) "Paper Doll," Rachael Yamagata.
And they'll dress you up
and stand you up in all the right places;
with words like honey,
they'll smile as they change your faces,
no regard for you at all
and you find they treat you like a paper doll.
08) "Happy," Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins.
They warn you about killers and thieves in the night;
I worry about cancer and living right,
but my mama never warned me about my own destructive appetite
or the pitfalls of control, how it locks you in your grave,
looking for someone to be saved under my restraint.
09) "Take It Back," She & Him.
I don't wanna wonder whether you love me,
I don't wanna wonder whether you care
so don't try to woo me, don't try to fool me --
oh, I know all of your tricks.
10) "Fools Gold," Katie Herzig.
From the time you said hello and what's your name,
you were a work of art, played me like a little game.
Now you can break my heart and I will love you just the same.
I can see through your eyes, your fingers crossed by your sides,
but I need your little shiny lies.
11) "Giving Up," Ingrid Michaelson.
'cause I am giving up on making passes
and I am giving up on half-empty glasses
and I am giving up on greener grasses.
I am giving up.
12) "Hanging On Too Long," Duffy.
It was just my mistake, thinking you cared.
It was just my mistake, thinking you'd be there,
that you'd be by my side and that you wouldn't lie --
my mistake.
13) "Home," Sheryl Crow.
I woke up this morning, now I understand
what it means to give your life to just one man.
Afraid of feeling nothing, no bees or butterflies,
my head is full of voices and my house is full of lies.
This is home.
14) "Magnolia," the Hush Sound.
Your words like smoke, they made me sick,
but they kept me warm.
Run where you'll be safe
through the garden gates
to the shelter of magnolia.
15) "You Don't Own Me," Lesley Gore.
I don't tell you what to say,
I don't tell you what to do,
so just let me be myself --
that's all I ask of you.
